In 2012, in Canada, the Rwandan Genocide Continues to Make News

I came across this article this morning, just after being lent a book yesterday by a Rwandese friend (once I read the book, which is about personal testimonies of the genocide, including the brother of the person who gave me the book, I will write about it. One of the people we met and spoke with in Rwanda is the author of the book). The news article below shows that the genocide continues to be a complicated matter:

MONTREAL — The latest twist in an ongoing legal battle surrounding the deportation of a Rwandan man is set to play out in a Montreal courtroom today.

Lawyers are hoping to buy Leon Mugesera more time in Canada.

They will argue Ottawa has an obligation to stay his deportation while a UN body examines his claims he will be tortured if he’s returned to Rwanda.

Mugesera is wanted in the African country on charges of inciting genocide and crimes against humanity, stemming from an inflammatory anti-Tutsi speech he gave in 1992.

The speech is considered a key propaganda tool during a 100-day massacre of between 800,000 and one million Rwandans in 1994.

Mugesera and his supporters say it will be impossible for him to have a fair trial in Rwanda where he is considered an enemy of the current government.

The United Nations Committee Against Torture has requested Canada give it time to examine Mugesera’s case, a process that could take a few months.

Ottawa has said it would ignore the UN request but abide by any ruling by Quebec Superior Court, which authorized the deportation delay last week.

Mugesera was originally scheduled to be deported last week, but a last-minute hospitalization and the new legal challenge stalled that attempt.

Mugesera is currently being held in an immigration detention centre near Montreal after being deemed a flight risk.
